Heavy rain hit Nagpur on Thursday, causing floods near Ambazari Lake and along the Nag River. People were worried about floods like last September when over 25,000 homes were underwater. Experts say this rain might break a record set in 1966. As per the weather experts, Thursday’s heavy rainfall is expected to surpass the record for single-day rainfall of 56mm, which was set on May 5, 1966, once the updated figures are available on Friday

Accoridng to the Times of India report, Firefighters were busy all day dealing with waterlogging and fallen trees. Many parts of the city had power cuts. Overflowing sewers put neighbourhoods like Purohit Layout and Ambazari Layout on alert.

Residents, like Nirmala Bhavsar from Ambazari Layout, faced water and sewage entering their homes again, despite efforts to fix damages from last year’s floods. Gangadhar Bedekar from Yeshwant Nagar had put up barriers after last year’s flooding to keep water out, showing the financial strain on affected families.

Residents also expressed concerns about the Nag River’s condition. Dr. Archana Deshpande from Shankar Nagar criticized the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s cleaning efforts, pointing out blockages caused by silt. Observations in Daga Layout and Corporation Colony found blocked stormwater networks, making rainwater drainage difficult.
