The Election Commission of India (ECI) has warned that temperatures could be higher than usual during the polling period leading up to June 4, when results will be announced. The commission has issued guidelines for voters to avoid heat-related health problems to ensure voter safety. Polling station authorities have also been instructed to provide necessary facilities to prevent heat strokes, dehydration, and other health issues.
ECI warns of high temperatures
The Election Commission stated that the Director General of the Indian Meteorological Department assured them during the meeting that there's no significant worry regarding heatwaves for the second phase of the general elections on April 26.
The weather forecast for the 13 States and Union Territories participating in Phase 2 is deemed "normal" by the EC. To address concerns about above-normal temperatures and heatwaves in some regions, the Commission sought advice from the Meteorological Department to comprehend the evolving weather scenario and discuss strategies to alleviate any risks during the election period.
"I am directed to state that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated the probability of above-normal temperatures during the forthcoming summer season, which may translate into stronger and longer heatwave spells, especially during March to June, 2024. In this regard, a copy of Do’s & Don’ts issued by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) regarding minimisation of Heat wave impact, is being forwarded herewith," said Vibhor Agrawal, under-secretary of the ECI in a statement released on April 22.
"Further, a copy of Commission’s letter No. 464/INST-AMF/2022/EPS, dated 10 June, 2023, regarding Assured Minimum Facilities (AMF) and other facilities to be provided at the Polling Stations, is also being forwarded for strict compliance by all concerned," the statement added.
IMD supports Election Commission planning
Director General of Meteorology of the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, stated, "IMD is continuously coordinating with the Election Commission of India. We provide them with seasonal forecasts as well as monthly, weekly, and daily updates on heatwaves and humidity levels. Our aim is to furnish the ECI with forecasts for areas where elections are scheduled in different phases."
Prime Minister Narendra Modi led a meeting to prepare for the upcoming hot weather season. They discussed forecasts indicating higher temperatures from April to June, especially in Central and western India.
The focus was on healthcare readiness, ensuring essential supplies like medicines and water. IMD's outlook predicts above-normal temperatures for central and western India, while some areas might see normal or cooler weather.
Mohapatra warned about the dangers of heatwaves, especially for vulnerable groups. He emphasized the need for cooling centers and other measures to protect public health.
The first phase of Lok Sabha elections saw a 60% turnout. The second phase is on April 26, followed by more phases until June 1.
