On the morning of January 19, 2025, dense fog covered over 20 districts in Madhya Pradesh, making it difficult to see even 50 meters in some places, especially in the Gwalior-Chambal region. Due to the low visibility, residents in cities like Ashoknagar were seen driving to work and school with their vehicle headlights on. According to the meteorological department, the state’s weather has been unusually cold due to icy winds and fog.
The fog began affecting the state early in the morning and was severe in Gwalior, Sheopur, Morena, Bhind, and Datia. The department issued a cold-day alert for Shajapur, Sehore, Raisen, Ratlam, and Singrauli, warning of persistent cold conditions. Similar fog and cold conditions were reported in over 20 districts on January 18, affecting the morning commute.
In Gwalior and Chambal, dense fog limited visibility to 50 meters, while a jet stream wind blew at 241 km/h, intensifying the chill. The icy winds dropped temperatures, with Shivpuri and Gwalior at 19°C and 21°C, respectively. In other state areas, temperatures were around 20-23°C, with cold-day conditions persisting.
Weather experts predict fog for the next few days. On January 20, fog is expected in Gwalior, Sheopur, Morena, Bhind, Datia, Niwari, Tikamgarh, and Chhatarpur, with a similar pattern on January 21. The meteorological department has issued advisories, including school closures and safety measures for vulnerable workers due to the hazardous weather.
This cold wave isn’t unusual for Madhya Pradesh in January. Historically, January has seen extreme cold and occasional rainfall. In 1935, Bhopal recorded its lowest night temperature of 0.6°C, while Indore reached -1.1°C.
During this time of year, the region has experienced significant rainfall in addition to the cold. January rains are frequent, with some years witnessing heavy rainfall of up to 3 inches in 24 hours. This year’s cold and foggy weather will persist for at least three more days, with the department urging the public to stay warm and be cautious while traveling.
