In the latest weather updates, the Indian Meteorological Department has provided a detailed forecast about the weather conditions in different regions, including temperature fluctuations, expected rain, and hailstorms.

As of January 14, North India is experiencing a drop in temperatures, with some regions facing severe cold waves. Srinagar in Jammu & Kashmir recorded a low of -5°C, Keylong in Himachal Pradesh experienced -8°C, and Mukteshwar in Uttarakhand recorded -3°C.

Churu in Rajasthan recorded a low of 3°C, and Amritsar in Punjab recorded 4.7°C. These lower-than-usual temperatures are due to the ongoing cold wave in northern India.

Western Disturbance

A fresh western disturbance is active, with a cyclonic circulation over Iran. This pattern is expected to bring rain and thunderstorms to Northern India. Hailstorms are expected in parts of Punjab and Haryana on January 15. The western disturbance will also cause rain and thunderstorms in Uttarakhand from January 15-19, and other regions like Uttar Pradesh, East Rajasthan, and Chandigarh.

Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Muzaffarabad will experience rain and snow between January 16-19, significantly affecting local temperatures and causing disruptions.

Southern India will see light to moderate rainfall over the next few days. A cyclonic circulation over the Comorin area has been generating moderate rains in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal. From January 14-16, thunderstorms and rainfall with lightning are expected in these regions. Similarly, Kerala and Mahe will also experience light to moderate rainfall during this period.

In coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema, rainfall is expected to intensify today, with some areas recording up to 70mm. Thunderstorms are likely over the next couple of days.

Cold wave in the North & central India

The cold wave in northern regions has caused severe winter conditions in several states. Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are experiencing morning frost, leading to a chilling cold wave. The minimum temperature in Chandigarh and parts of Haryana is expected to plummet, causing discomfort for residents.

In addition to the cold wave, dense fog poses a risk of disrupting daily life. It’s expected to affect parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh from January 14-20, reducing visibility and creating hazardous conditions for commuters.

In western and eastern Rajasthan, Bihar, and Uttarakhand, visibility is expected to remain poor due to dense fog, especially in the mornings and nights.

In Central India, temperatures will likely rise by 2-3°C in the coming days, bringing slight relief from the chill. However, thunderstorms are expected in Madhya Pradesh on January 15.

Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh recorded a temperature of 5°C today, indicating the cool conditions in the region.
