Ground Report | New Delhi: Kolkata safest city for women; The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) released said that there has been a significant reduction in criminal cases in Kolkata in the year 2020 as compared to Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai.

Kolkata safest city for women

The latest NCRB report states that Kolkata has emerged as the safest metropolis for the third consecutive year with a score of 129.5 out of 19 cities with more than 20 lakh populations. The number of crimes registered is 129.5 per one lakh people.

Despite Kolkata emerging as the safest metropolis for the third year in a row, why are the cases of crime especially against women increasing in the state? There is no general opinion among experts on the reasons for this.

State Women's Commission chairperson Leena Ganguly says, "The whole world is grappling with the effects of the negative aspects of the lockdown. Bengal is no exception. It is because of the trust in the administration and the government that more and more women are facing the atrocities and Coming out with complaints of crimes."

Hyderabad second

In this list, Hyderabad is second with a score of 233 and Mumbai is at number three with 318.5. The capital Delhi is in seventh place with a score of 1608.6. It has been said in the report that there has been a steady decline in criminal cases in Kolkata since the last six years i.e. 2014. In the year 2014, where 28,226 criminal cases were registered in the metropolis, in 2020 this figure is 18,277.

During this only 53 cases of murder were reported in the metropolis. Apart from this, 121 cases of attempt to murder were reported whereas in the year 2018, 55 and 143 such cases were registered respectively. It has been said in the report that Bengal is at the eighth position in the list of safe states. The crime rate in the state is 186.6 which is much lower than the national average of 478.4.

Crime against women increased

Madhya Pradesh ranks first in this case with 17,008 cases. It is followed by Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra respectively. However, the rate of crime against children in Bengal is low as compared to many other states. There are three crore children in the state and the crime rate against them is 34.

Similarly, the cases of crime against women have also increased. During the last year, where such cases have decreased in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, they have increased in Bengal and Odisha. In Bengal, 29,859 such cases were registered in the year 2019 while in 2020 this figure has increased to 36,439. By the way, only nine women were killed during this period.

The report said that of the total cases registered against women, 19,962 i.e. more than half are related to harassment and domestic violence at the hands of the husband. Women activists say that due to the awareness of women in the state, more and more such cases are coming in front of the police. This is the reason why these figures have registered an increase.
