Kashmir's last German Khar engineer

It was not easy to make tools like the Germans, but a family in Kashmir surprised them as well. The last engineer of the same tradition is now old.

Ghulam Mohiuddin is going to be 80 years old, but even today he works in his small workshop in Rainawadi, Srinagar.

Throughout the day, he fixes small iron tools used in the hospital. Due to his long experience, he himself creates such tools.

Kashmir was ruled by Maharaja Hari Singh in the 1940s. During that time Germans used to make medical tools there. The people of Mohiuddin's family used to repair these tools of the Germans. German tool makers were greatly impressed by his skill. The Maharaja named the German Khar to German tool makers.

Mohiuddin can still be seen making many tools by hand. It takes a week to make such a tool. In return, Mohiuddin earns around Rs 3,500. This tool will be used in Srinagar hospital.

Between low income and waning age, Mohiuddin says, "I make these tools because they save lives." If it had not happened, I would have left this job. " According to Mohiuddin, he also tried to hire some people, but he did not have the patience needed to make tools.

In the 1940s, a German administrator of the hospital in Srinagar wrote a letter to Mohiuddin's father. His work was praised in the letter, "The work is so perfect that no one can say what is real and what is its copy. His work is full of precision and precision. "
