Kashmir: Two policemen, three civilians killed in militant attack in Sopore

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah took to Twitter to condemn the attack.

Ground Report | Srinagar: Two policemen and three civilians were killed and three others were injured when suspected militants opened fire on a police party at Main Chowk Sopore in north Kashmir's Baramulla district on Saturday. Inspector-General of Police Kashmir Zone IGP Vijay Kumar said that Three local people were also shot in the terrorist attack, who was taken to the hospital but doctors declared them dead.

According to sources, suspected terrorists opened fire on a joint team of police and CRPF in Rampora area of ​​Sopore in North Kashmir on Saturday. Meanwhile, the area has been cordoned off to nab the terrorists, sources said.

News Agency GNS quoted, Director General of Police Dilbagh Singh that militants attacked the police party on covid-19 duty at Arampora area in the Sopore town. Two policemen and as many as civilians were killed, he said.

Three police personnel including an assistant sub-inspector were injured in the attack, he said. Sources said that two more civilians were also injured in the attack.

Meanwhile, sources identified the civilians killed as Manzoor Ahmad Shallah of Shalimar Colony Sopore and Bashir Ahmad of Mahrajpora Sopore.

The policemen killed in the attack have been identified as Showkat Ahmad son of Abdul Gani Parray of Goripora Beerwah Budgam and Constable Waseem Ahmad son of Mohammad Sadiq Bhat of Narbal Srinagar. Among the injured cops, Mukesh Kumar has been referred to Srinagar hospital for specialized treatment. One of the other injured police personnel has been identified as SPO Danish.

While the area has been cordoned off and a hunt has been launched to nab the attackers, the officials said that senior police officers have reached the spot and are taking an overall view of the situation.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference Vice President Omar Abdullah took to Twitter to condemn the attack.

Omar Abdullah tweeted, "Horrible news coming from Sopore. Such attacks must be condemned without reservation. Prayers for the injured and condolences to the families of the deceased."

On Friday, militants attacked a check post of security forces in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir. A naka of Central Reserve Police Force and police was built in Aglar area, which was attacked in the afternoon. Unknown assailants fired heavily here, after which the security forces retaliated. After the action of the soldiers, the attackers fled from the spot.
