Four Muslim students of a government college for girls in a town called Adupi have been studying outside their classrooms since the beginning of this month because they say they are not allowed to wear hijab in class.

According to the PTI, college principal Rudra Gowda, referring to the rules of the college, said that students are allowed to wear hijab on the premises of the educational institution, but not inside the classrooms.

The parents of the students have met with the authorities but no solution has been found despite the passage of more than two weeks. The principal said that the college administration would soon meet the parents of the students and inform them about the rules and regulations of the college so that the matter could be resolved soon.

Yashpal Suvarna, vice-president of the college development committee, told the Deccan Herald on Saturday that 150 women from minority communities studying at the college had "not made such demands".

He said: "The college has its own rules and regulations and disciplinary procedures. Uniforms have been introduced to promote equality in education, as many poor women attend college. Yashpal Suvarna added: "If they (the students) are willing to follow the rules of the college, they can take classes. If she does not want to follow the rules, she can find another college for education.

PFI Secretary General of State Nasir Pasha told the newspaper that the incident has taken away religious freedom enshrined in our constitution, he said. "Just as Hindu students wear a bindi and Christian nuns wear a headdress, Muslim students should be allowed to wear a headscarf," he said.

According to The Hindu, Udupi MLA and University Development Committee Chairman K. Raghupati Bhat held a parent meeting of over 1,000 students on January 1 and said the university will continue with its uniform code, which includes a headscarf. , as has been done. decided by the committee. The deputy director of the Maruthi pre-university department also attended the meeting.

A father of one of the six students told the newspaper that he cannot compromise his internship and that he will admit his daughter to another university.
