Ground Report | New Delhi: Karnal SDM Ayush Sinha; Karnal Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Ayush Sinha on Saturday courted controversy after he was caught on camera and directed policemen to punish and break their (farmers) heads if they try to break barricades during farmers' protest in Karnal.

In a viral video on social media, SDM Sinha is heard saying “It is very simple and clear, whoever he is, from wherever he is, no one should be allowed to reach there. We will not let this line break at any cost. Just pick up your sticks and let them go. Hit hard… It's very obvious, no need for any instructions, just bang them hard. If I see even a single protester here, I want to see him bang his head, bang his head,".

Then Aayush Sinha says, "Action will do." Then the voice of Yes Sir is heard. After this Ayush Sinha says, "Pucca". After this, when Yes sir's voice comes, Sinha says, "Okay, line up and get it done."

Regarding this video, SDM Ayush Sinha later said that "Stone pelting had started at many places... It was said during the briefing to use force proportionately: Karnal SDM Ayush Sinha on viral video asked policemen to hit protesting farmers on their heads.

Congress criticized

Congress has criticized this incident and said that the government is treating the farmers like General Dyer. Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said that the government "lathi-charged the food donors in Karnal and got General Dyer-like brutality broadcast live".

Farmers have been protesting for the last several months against the three agricultural laws brought by the central government. Farmers are demanding repeal of these three agricultural laws.

Several rounds of meetings have been held between farmers' organizations and the government but no decision has been taken yet. The government says that it will not repeal agricultural laws but is ready to amend them. At the same time, the farmers say that they will not back down until the government accepts their demands.

Lathi-charge done by administration

In a press conference held a while back, the United Kisan Morcha has said that the government deliberately wants to end the farmers' agitation. Farmer leaders criticized the state government and the state government and said that the government wants farmers not to reach the Mahapanchayat to be held in Muzaffarnagar on 5th September.

Farmer leader Gurnam Singh said, "Lathi-charge has been done by the administration in Karnal. We condemn it. The farmers were protesting peacefully but the administration has used force against them. After the lathi charge on the farmers, the farmers have blocked the Delhi-Amritsar highway in Kurukshetra. The farmers say that they will not open the jam until instructions are received from the United Kisan Morcha.
