J.K. Rowling controversy; why I Stand With JK Rowling is trending?

Warner Bros. continues to support controversial “Harry Potter” author JK Rowling after her string of transphobic comments. During an anniversary “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” press conference with actor Tom Felton, a Sky News reporter was barred from asking about Rowling’s involvement. Felton was interviewed as part of the Mandrakes and Magical Creatures feature at Warner Brothers Studios.

Sky News reporter Claire Gregory asked: “And you are, you still are, you and the other stars of the film, still the face of the franchise, if you will. We talk and listen to you. JK obviously has kind of a back seat now. Is it strange that she is present at things like this?

A third-party public relations representative chimed in before Felton could respond, saying, “Next question, please.” The rep later added, “JK Rowling is not connected to Warner or Tom Felton, the team felt she wasn’t relevant to the piece.”

A spokesperson for Warner Bros. Studio Tour London commented on the viral moment, telling Daily Mail UK that “Warner Bros. has enjoyed a creative, productive and fulfilling partnership with J.K. Rowling for the last 20 years. She is one of the most successful storytellers in the world and we are proud to be the studio that will bring her vision, characters and stories to life now and for decades to come.”

However, in a new statement published by Warner Bros., via Variety, they clarified that this is false and that the studio continues to maintain a long-standing relationship with Rowling:

“Warner Bros. has enjoyed a creative, productive and fulfilling partnership with J.K. Rowling for the last 20 years. She is one of the world’s most successful storytellers, and we are proud to be the studio that will bring her vision, characters and stories to life now and for decades to come. On Monday, an outside media agency issued a statement that seemed to counter this view. The statement was totally wrong, and Warner Bros. Studio Tour London regrets that it occurred as part of a media event on that day.”

Some have pointed out that Warner Bros. is apparently picking and choosing who to back and who to leave out. They stay with J.K. Rowling but dropped Johnny Depp from Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore due to his very public legal battle with his ex-wife Amber Heard. That said, although Warner Bros. did not support Depp, J.K. Rowling did. She publicly stated that she would be “happy” to keep Depp in office in 2017. This is what she said at the time on her official website:

“When Johnny Depp was cast as Grindelwald, I thought he would be wonderful for the part. However, at the time of filming his cameo appearance in the first film, stories had surfaced in the press that deeply concerned me and everyone else involved in the franchise.

Harry Potter fans had legitimate questions and concerns about our choice to continue with Johnny Depp in the role. As David Yates, long-time Potter director, has already said, we naturally considered changing the cast. I understand why some have been confused and angry about why that didn’t happen. Based on our understanding of the circumstances, the filmmakers and I are not only comfortable with our original cast, but we’re really happy that Johnny is playing a major character in the movies. I loved writing the first two scripts and can’t wait for the fans to see The Crimes of Grindelwald. I accept that there will be those who are not satisfied with our choice of actor for the lead role. However, the conscience is not governed by a committee. Within the fictional world and outside of it, we all have to do what we think is the right thing to do.”
