Srinagar: Two days after security forces killed scholar turned militant Mannan Wani in an encounter in Handwara, another militant was killed in Pulwama on Saturday.

While one was killed, another has been injured in the encounter that broke out in south Kashmir, police officials said. Officials added that personnel from 55 RR, CRPF and Special Operations Group of Jammu & Kashmir police laid a siege around a cluster of houses in Babgund area and began a door to door search operation around 2 am. The operation was launched on intelligence inputs which suggested terrorists hiding in the area.

Militants hiding in one of the residential houses fired upon the forces, triggering a gunfight. The slain militant was identified as Shabir Ahmad Dar, a resident of Samboora. Another militant who was critically injured has been identified as Showkat Ahmad hails from  Muran village of Pulwama, was critically injured in the gunbattle.

Police said Ahmad managed to escape the security cordon and was later admitted in Srinagar’s SMHS hospital by an unknown person. Hospital sources said the militant had sustained a bullet injury in his abdomen and was in critical condition.

Meanwhile Train service remained suspended for the second day for security reasons in south Kashmir. However, the services were resumed in north Kashmir. The services were suspended since Friday when separatists called for a shutdown to protest against the killing of two Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) militants in an encounter with security forces in Kupwara on Thursday.
