J&K LG Manoj Sinha orders magisterial inquiry into Hyderpora encounter

Ground report | New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Thursday ordered a magisterial inquiry into the Hyderpora encounter in which four people, including a building owner and a doctor, were killed.

The office of the J&K LG tweeted: '‘A magisterial inquiry by officer of ADM rank has been ordered in Hyderpora encounter. Govt will take suitable action as soon as report is submitted in a time-bound manner. JK admin reiterates commitment of protecting lives of innocent civilians it will ensure there is no injustice.”

Four people were killed in the Hyderpora encounter on Monday evening. However, the families of the three killed contested the police's claim, saying those killed were innocent. Kashmir Police Chief Vijay Kumar admitted that the building's owner Altaf Ahmed was a civilian who was killed in a crossfire, but added that Dr. Mudasir Gul was an OGW while the third was identified as Amir Ahmed.

The People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) said they are not worried about the elections but want to protect people's lives, adding that they "will not allow Kashmir to be turned into a graveyard".

Addressing media persons after the meeting in Srinagar, PAGD spokesperson, Muhammad Yusuf Tarigami said that they had an in-depth discussion on the Hydepora shelling and demanded a time-bound judicial inquiry into the incident.

He said those involved in the incident should be dealt with as per law. "We believe that those who are involved regardless of their status are violators of the law and deserve punishment."
