More than 300 Palestinians were injured in clashes with Israeli police in Jerusalem on Monday, with several rockets fired from Gaza into Israeli territory, while Israeli retaliatory airstrikes reportedly killed 20 people, including children.

The Palestinian militant group Hamas has threatened to launch rocket attacks on Israel if it does not stop targeting Palestinians.

On Monday night, the Israeli military claimed that Hamas had tried to fire dozens of rockets at the town of Ashkelon from Gaza, which was thwarted. The Israeli military says fighter jets have targeted a Hamas tunnel in Gaza.

Details of the casualties or damage caused by the latest Israeli attack have not yet been released.

Earlier on Monday evening, Israeli army spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conrex told reporters that "we have begun to hit military targets in Gaza."

Israeli officials say no one was killed in the rocket attack on Monday evening, but Israel has killed three Hamas militants in retaliation.

What happened in the recent clashes?

The United States, the European Union, Russia and the United Nations, which are holding talks in the Middle East, have also expressed concern over the violence and called for restraint on all sides.

Rania Zabanaha , affiliated with Al Jazeera, shared a video in which she said that according to local sources, dozens of people in Al-Aqsa Mosque were injured due to tear gas and stun grenades fired by Israeli authorities.

Elizabeth Sarkov, a human rights activist, also shared the videos , saying: "Israeli forces are throwing grenades inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Violence is feared to escalate as Israel allows far-right Israelis to march on the old city, commemorating the 1967 occupation of East Jerusalem.

Similarly, the British newspaper The Independent's correspondent for the Middle East, Bell Trio, tweeted and shared a video in which it can be seen that a car went out of control and hit a person on the road.

Bell Trevo commented on the video: "The situation in Jerusalem is very tense."

The video is said to have been driven by a Jewish man, who lost control of his vehicle after being pelted with stones.

CBS News correspondent Imtiaz Tayyab shared the video and tweeted: "Tragic scenes inside the Al-Aqsa Mosque this morning, where Israeli authorities entered the third holiest site of Islam."

Political reactions

Turkey called Israel an “apartheid state” that must end “heinous and cruel attacks” against Palestinians.

“To the Islamic world, we say: It’s time to stop Israel’s heinous and cruel attacks!” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s press aide Fahrettin Altun wrote on Twitter.

“To humanity, we say: It’s time to put this apartheid state in its place!”

The violence in Jerusalem was “an attack on all Muslims”, Erdogan added, and “protecting the honor of Jerusalem is a duty for every Muslim.”
