India slams Canadian PM Justin Trudeau`s remarks on farmer protests

India has reacted to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's statement, saying his remarks are 'unwarranted', especially with regard to interfering in the internal affairs of a democratic country.

India's Foreign Ministry spokesman Anurag Shrivastava said that it would be best if diplomatic dialogue is not misrepresented for political purposes.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau raised concern by commenting on the ongoing farmer movement in India and said that he would talk to Indian officials in this regard.

In a Facebook video wishing Guruparva, the Canadian Prime Minister said on Monday that Canada has always stood together to protect the right to peaceful protests.

Trudeau had conveyed good wishes to the people of Canada, especially the Sikhs, on the occasion of Gurupurab. In this video he also mentioned the peasant movement.

 He said that the situation is very worrying. Trudeau said, 'We are worried about family and friends. We know this is the truth for many people. ' 

Expressing support from the movement, Trudeau continued, 'Canada will always defend the right to peaceful demonstrations. We believe in conversation. We have put our concerns before the Indian administration. It is time for everyone to come together.

Canadian Defense Minister Harjit Singh wrote on Twitter - 'It is disturbing to show cruelty in peaceful demonstrations in India. Many people in my area have families there and are concerned about their people. Healthy democracies allow peaceful demonstrations. I appeal to protect this fundamental right. '

The Government of India had called the farmers' organizations for a meeting at Vigyan Bhawan on Tuesday afternoon, but before that the Punjab Kisan Sangharsh Samiti has indicated not to attend the meeting. The committee says that all farmer organizations should be called to this meeting.

When questioned by journalists on his remarks, Anurag Shrivastava said, "We have seen some non-factual comments of the Canadian leader related to India's farmers. Such remarks are unfair, especially in the context of internal affairs of a democratic country. "

Recently, farmers are opposing the passage of three new laws related to agriculture.
