India now replaces Italy as COVID deaths cross 35,000

With 779 deaths reported in last 24 hours, India now has the 5th highest COVID deaths in the world. Earlier, Italy was on number 5 in terms of deaths due to COVID-19. But now, India has replaced Italy with a death toll of 35, 747.

At present, the United States has reported highest COVID deaths of 1,48,640. This is followed by Brazil (88,539), UK (45, 961), Mexico (44,876) and now India (35, 747).

According to the Union Health Ministry, India conducted record 6 lakh tests in the last 24 hours. The target is to raise this capacity by 10 lakh daily. Further, the Ministry noted that recoveries in India have now exceeded active cases by 1.9 times. However, it is important to note that the maximum number of fatalities in India have been reported in July itself i.e. 18, 356. Also, the number of daily fresh cases have been continuously increasing. On Thursday, record 55,000 new cases were reported, which is the highest so far. 

Till date, Maharashtra has reported the highest number of deaths which is 14, 463. This is followed by Delhi where the death toll stands at 3,936. Other than these two states, Tamil Nadu has a death toll of 3,838, followed by Gujarat (2,418), Karnataka (2,147), Uttar Pradesh (1,530), West Bengal (1,536) and Andhra Pradesh (1,213). Further, states like Odisha, Himachal Pradesh, Telangana and North-eastern states have reported less than 500 deaths till date.

Further, trends show that Andhra Pradesh is about to overtake Delhi in terms of its COVID cases.

According to Rajesh Bhushan, Officer on Special Duty in Health Ministry, 21 states and union territories have a positivity rate of less than 10% while in four it is less than 5%. However, looking at the daily rise in COVID cases, the Ministry noted that the strategy of comprehensive testing, tracking and treatment will continue in the country.

The total COVID cases in India now stand at 1, 638, 870. Out of these, more than 1, 057, 805 people have recovered. Whereas, active cases stand at 545, 318.
