A scientific study published today in The Journal of Genetic Counseling ensures that first cousins can have children with each other without their children having great risks of suffering from genetic malformations or other types of congenital diseases, according to the New York Times. Contrary to popular belief, there are no biological reasons to discourage first cousins from having children. The study’s conclusions are the result of a review of six studies conducted from 1965 to August 2000, analyzing thousands of cases.
Although the risk of having a child with malformations among first cousins is greater than among unrelated parents, the risk is not as great as most people think, according to the study by Dr Arno Motulsky, professor emeritus of medicine and genetics from the University of Washington. The general population risk of having a child with spina bifida or fibrosis problems is 3 or 4%, to this risk, first cousins should add only 1.7 to 2.8%.

Many sociological studies said that consanguinity marriages could enforce the couples’ stability due to higher compatibility between husband and wife who share the same social relationships after marriage as before marriage, as well as the compatibility between the couple and other family members.
While babies born out of such marriage could have a multiplicity problems. Heart problems are highly, limb anomalies, and nervous disorders.
Eamonn Sheridan, a researcher at the University of Leeds, is leading a team of researchers who surveyed births at Bradford Central Hospital. The results of the survey showed that there were 13,500 babies born between 2007 and 2011. Of these, 11,396 children’s family data or essential details were already known to researchers. 18% of these children were born as a result of marriages between first cousins or cousins. The couple was mostly from Pakistan.
Three per cent of the total children in the survey, or 386 newborns, were found to have some form of anomaly or health problems. They found defects in the nervous system, respiratory system and digestive system. The study also found that Bradford, a city in the United Kingdom, had twice as many cases of the newborn’s disease as the national average. Researchers have ruled out the possibility of these diseases and other genetic defects in newborns, such as alcohol use, smoking and social deprivation.
