Mohan Bhagwat's statement comes at a time when several BJP-ruled states have brought laws against inter-religious marriages. Hinduist organizations call such marriages 'love-jihad'. It is believed that the state governments have brought this law under pressure from the RSS.

Praising the Indian family system, Bhagwat said that western countries used to study our family system, but some forces worked to destroy these values.

He said, "Western countries started sending charas to China to enslave people. The young man got addicted to charas and thus the West ruled China. The same thing is happening in our country.
