GR News Desk, New Delhi, 16 January। Research scholars from across the country are protesting at the MHRD headquarters New Delhi. Researchers are demanding 80% hike in their fellowships. Ground Report is at the venue of the protest in New Delhi. Asking for the hike in fellowships granted by the Government, research scholars are on the road to protest against the government for not listening to them.
One of the organiser of the protest told The Ground Report that they spoke to the Ministry officials, they said, Minister of MHRD Prakash Javadekar is in Bangalore and the Secreatary to MHRD R Subrahamanayam who deal with such issues is busy and can not listen to the Students protesting outside the MHRD premises. Around 2000 students are protesting outside the MHRD premises.
PM Narendra Modi, on 106th Indian Science Congress at Jalandhar on January 3, said, “Our strong research ecosystem must be developed in such universities and colleges. I call upon the Prime Ministerial Science, Technology and Education Council to discuss this issue in detail and formulate an agenda in collaboration with the MHRD.” But still nothing has been done for the research scholars in fulfilling their demands.
Now the sources said that the students protesting will first finish the protest infront of MHRD headquaters and then they will shift to Jantar Mantar for indefinite hunger strike.
Some of the major demands by the research scholars are
1) The fellowship of JRF, SRF and Phd. to be raised 80% according to the 20% hike per year.
2)The fellowship amount to be credited on time. Till now it has been late for months which makes difficult for researchers in their works.
3) Government should make guidelines under the Pay Commission to assure the timing of fellowship credited.
