Hate against Asian Americans increased

Ground Report | New Delhi: Hate against Asian Americans; The latest data released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Tuesday, August 31, said that the different crime rates against black and Asian Americans have been noted in the US last year. The year 2020 was particularly bad in terms of crimes against blacks and Asians.

Hate against Asian Americans

Last year, when there were massive Black Lives Matter protests, crimes related to racism also increased in America. The number of racist and specifically hate crimes against black citizens in the US increased by 40 percent from 1,972 in 2019 to 2,755 in 2020.

The number of crimes reported annually in 2020 as compared to 2019 remained at its highest level in the last 12 years. Also, it is the number of offenses that have been reported to the police. The number of incidents that have not been reported to the police is much higher.

According to data released by the FBI, there were widespread protests in the US last year after protests against the killing of black George Floyd by police officers. Despite this, there has been an increase in racist and especially hate crimes against black citizens in the country.

Asian people targeted

According to the FBI report, many Asian people were also targeted in the country last year for various racist reasons. In 2019, a total of 161 racist or intentional criminal attacks against Asian Americans were reported to the police. In contrast, last year the number of such crimes increased by 70 percent to 274. An important aspect is that the rate of hate crimes against people of Asian descent in the US has increased since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and the latest figures confirm this trend.

US Attorney General Merrick Garland said after the release of the latest annual data on hate crimes against blacks and Asians that the figures point to a problem that requires immediate and full attention to its solution.

In more than half of these crimes, the victims were humiliated, harassed, and threatened, the report said. About 18 percent of criminal cases involved a serious physical assault on victims. Last year, at least 22 people were killed in the US in hate crimes related to color or race.
