All-rounder Hardik Pandya and batsman K L Rahul have been suspended from playing for India until the inquiry into their alleged remarks on women on the television show, Koffee with Karan are completed.

“Both Pandya and Rahul have been suspended pending an inquiry,” news reports quoted CoA chief Vindo Rai as saying. Both Pandya and Rahul will be issued fresh show cause notices.

Since Pandya and Rahul have been suspended their service would not be required for the three-match ODI series against Australia, starting January 12 in Sydney. Hence, the duo will return home from Australia.

“Whether it will be an internal committee of the BCCI or an ad hoc ombudsman who will conduct an inquiry, is yet to be ascertained,” the official was quoted as saying by PTI. “The Indian team management will take a call on whether they would want to keep the two with the team or send them back. There is a school of thought that they be kept with the team as the backlash back home could be severe but the majority in BCCI brass is against the decision,” he added.

BCCI included Rishabh Pant, Vijay Shankar, Manish Pandey and Shreyas Iyer as replacements of Pandya and Rahul. The Committee of Administrators (CoA) and BCCI legal counsel decided to issue a fresh show cause notice to the player with point-by-point breaches mentioned in their contracts. The inquiry committee will be formed within 15 days.

CoA member Diana Edulji recommended an immediate “suspension till pending inquiry” for both Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul. BCCI’s acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhary also endorsed Diana Edulji’s recommendation. Edulji also sought the opinion from the BCCI legal counsel and top officials before taking any decision. “It is imperative that players be put under suspension till further course of action is decided for this misconduct as was done in case of (BCCI) CEO (Rahul Johri) when he was sent on leave on sexual harassment matter,” read Edulji’s response to the legal opinion which is in possession of PTI.

Pandya and Rahul have been facing a tough time as their sexist and racist comments on women at Koffee with Karan drew severe criticism from all corners of the society. This was the first time cricketers appeared in the sleazy show, which is known for exposing jaw-dropping fact about celebrities, hosted by filmmaker Karan Johar.

During the show, Pandya admitted that he hooked up with multiple women and his parents encouraged his questionable attitude towards the women. “At a party, my parents asked me acha tera wala [your women] kaun sa hai, so I said yeh, yeh, yeh [pointing out to some women] and they were like ‘waah proud of u beta’,” Pandya had said.

“When I lost my virginity, I came home and said, ‘Mein karke aaya hai aaj (I had sex today)’.” he added. In the wake of social media backlash, Pandya offered his apology on his social media platforms but it seemed the BCCI was not happy with the development and issued show cause notices to the cricketers.
