Ground Report | New Delhi: Gurgaon Namaz Row; In Haryana's Gurgaon, Muslims faced further opposition from right-wing groups when they tried to offer prayers. This week - in the city's Udyog Vihar neighborhood - there was a heated exchange of words when angry mobs demanded to chant 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' to harass Muslims.

The scenes showed two groups (some of whom did not have face masks) shouting at each other.

A man wearing a saffron-colored shawl, another man in a red shirt and wool cap, and a third in a blue shirt can be heard chanting 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' to Muslims. This is not the first time that protests against Friday prayers have been staged in Gurgaon and demonstrations by hardline Hindus. There have been similar demonstrations before. It may be recalled that on May 18, 2018, the administration had approved prayers at 37 places in Gurgaon after discussions with both Hindu and Muslim communities.

Police say prayers have been held there for more than a year and so far there has been no problem. But the protesters claimed that the administration had only allowed prayers for one day on the condition that it would not cause any inconvenience to the locals.

A resident of Rajiv Nagar has lodged a written complaint with the police in this regard, which has the signatures of several protesters. The letter claimed that people who are not residents of nearby areas have been offering prayers at Sector 12-AK Chowk for some time now. The letter said they “doubt whether these people are Bangladeshis or Rohingya.” Their ID cards should be checked and a written list should be made.

A similar dispute over prayers has been going on in Sector 47 of Gurgaon for the past one month, but after continuous efforts of the police and administration and deployment of security forces, prayers are now being offered peacefully.
