Gurgaon Namaz Row; Must say Bharat Mata Ki Jai' if you want to pray

Ground Report | New Delhi: Gurgaon Namaz Row; In Haryana's Gurgaon, Muslims faced further opposition from right-wing groups when they tried to offer prayers. This week - in the city's Udyog Vihar neighborhood - there was a heated exchange of words when angry mobs demanded to chant 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' to harass Muslims.

The scenes showed two groups (some of whom did not have face masks) shouting at each other.

Must say Bharat Mata Ki Jai

A man wearing a saffron-colored shawl, another man in a red shirt and wool cap, and a third in a blue shirt can be heard chanting 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' to Muslims. Amit, now a well-known face in the protests, says, "If you want to stay in India, you have to say Bharat Mata Ki Jai." Claims to be and says that he has been associated with Hindu right-wing groups for 15 years.

“We will force you… you have to say this… you have to say this… you have to say this,” shouts the man in the maroon shirt. "Why can't you say that… do you live in Pakistan?" The other person is heard.

Amit, who was involved in the group that came to Udyog Vihar, said, 'The Chief Minister has said that Namaz will not be allowed in open areas. Now it is the responsibility of the police and the administration to follow their instructions. He said that Friday prayers should be held at the same six places where prayers have been offered.

Meanwhile, no namaz was offered in Sector 37, which has seen several protests over the issue and is no longer a designated venue. Some local people organized a 'Bhandara' on the spot.

This is not the first time that protests against Friday prayers have been staged in Gurgaon and demonstrations by hardline Hindus. There have been similar demonstrations before. It may be recalled that on May 18, 2018, the administration had approved prayers at 37 places in Gurgaon after discussions with both Hindu and Muslim communities.

Police say prayers have been held there for more than a year and so far there has been no problem. But the protesters claimed that the administration had only allowed prayers for one day on the condition that it would not cause any inconvenience to the locals.

A resident of Rajiv Nagar has lodged a written complaint with the police in this regard, which has the signatures of several protesters. The letter claimed that people who are not residents of nearby areas have been offering prayers at Sector 12-AK Chowk for some time now. The letter said they “doubt whether these people are Bangladeshis or Rohingya.” Their ID cards should be checked and a written list should be made.

A similar dispute over prayers has been going on in Sector 47 of Gurgaon for the past one month, but after continuous efforts of the police and administration and deployment of security forces, prayers are now being offered peacefully.

Muslims in India

Since then, many people have expressed similar views. Leading US-based historian Audrey Trishki wrote: “As a Hindu” is actually trending because a Hindu has raised his voice against the persecution of Muslims in India.

Along with this, he has given many explanations in this regard, how Hindus are being defined in the year 2021, which is very different. In response to Audrey Trusky, many have written, “As a Hindu, I do not need your advice.”

After actress Swara Bhaskar’s tweet, she has been trolled in most of the tweets. She has been targeted by the right because of her position in the past. Many people have written that they are Hindus only for one day and even that day to say that I am ashamed to be a Hindu. Many people have written that they are proud to be Hindus and proud to chant the slogan ‘Jai Shri Ram.
