Ground Report | New Delhi: Group Captain Varun Singh; A total of 14 people, including the country's first Chief of Defense Staff General Bipin Rawat and his wife, were on board when the Air Force helicopter Mi-17V5 crashed on Wednesday.

Of these, 13 people died but Group Captain Varun Singh is still alive. However, Varun's condition is also critical. On Thursday, he was airlifted from the Military Hospital in Wellington to Bangalore, Tamil Nadu.

On Thursday, Varun Singh was brought from Coonoor to Coimbatore in an ambulance and from there was airlifted to Command Hospital in Bengaluru.

Group Captain Varun Singh is the directing staff at Defense Services Staff College (DSSC), Wellington. On Wednesday, Varun had gone to Sulur to receive General Rawat. General Rawat was on his way to address the cadets of Wellington DSSC, but 10 km before his helicopter crashed.

Akhilesh Pratap Singh, uncle of Varun Singh former Congress MLA, said, "Even in this tragedy if he is alive, it is God's mercy. I hope he recovers soon. I am in Rudrapur." Was in a padyatra, when the news of a helicopter crash was received on WhatsApp's family group in Uttar Pradesh, doctors have said that the coming few days are very important for them.

President Ram Nath Kovind tweeted, "My prayers are for Group Captain Varun Singh, who survived the tragic helicopter crash. I wish him a speedy recovery. May he live long."

Varun Singh received India's third-highest gallantry award, the Shaurya Chakra, apart from on the battlefield in August this year. He received this award in October 2020 as a Wing Commander. Then his deployment was near the Light Combat Aircraft. On October 12, 2020, Varun was flying a Tejas aircraft for a combat exercise. Then after going up a lot, an emergency situation arose. A machine failed in the cockpit but Varun Singh showed indomitable courage and skill and made a safe landing.

Akhilesh Singh told The Hindu that his nephew Varun had joined the Air Force after clearing the NDA (National Defense Academy) exam and was declared the best pilot of his batch.

Varun Singh's family is also associated with the army. His father KP Singh has retired as a colonel in the army. Varun's brother is also an officer in the Navy. Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot and Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai visited Command Hospital in Bengaluru to talk to doctors about Varun.
