Ground Report | New Delhi: Goa sex scandal; Hours after a Bihar woman was allegedly victimized by the Congress over the alleged and direct involvement of Urban Development Minister Milind Naik in an all-out political war in a ghastly sex scandal, the minister resigned from the Goa cabinet. His resignation was immediately accepted and sent to the Governor for final formalities.

Minister resign

Naik is the first minister during the entire term of this government, expiring in two months, to be forced to resign on moral grounds over an alleged act of felony criminal misconduct.

The Chief Minister's Office (CMO) issued a statement late Wednesday night saying that Naik has tendered his resignation to ensure a "free and fair investigation". He said Naik will present his side and "fight" at an individual level. "The allegations against him are personal and what he will do about it will be a matter of his personal decision," Sawant said.

Sawant said that whatever investigation is required at the government level, it will be done 100 percent. He said the ministerial post held by Naik earlier would remain vacant.

Goa Pradesh Congress President Girish Chodankar on Wednesday named Naik as the minister involved in the "sex scandal". Chodankar alleged that he misused his office and sexually assaulted a woman from Bihar.

On December 10, a woman in Bihar filed a complaint against Congress leader Sankalp Amonkar and other party workers from South Goa alleging extortion, sexual harassment, and criminal conspiracy.

According to the complaint lodged in Bihar, the accused allegedly made his video and audio viral on social media. She also accused them of extortion and sexual harassment and offenses under the Information Technology Act. While zero FIR was registered on Friday, the matter was transferred to Goa Police on Tuesday.

On 30 November, Chodankar alleged that a minister in the Sawant-led government was involved in a "sex scandal" and said he would give the BJP government 15 days to act against the minister. At the end of the fortnight, Chodankar had said, if the government did not remove the minister from the cabinet, it would be forced to take his name.

After Naik named Chodankar, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee vice-president Sankalp Amonkar also lodged a police complaint against the minister. In a press conference, Amonkar also released a purported audio conversation between the victim and the minister.
