GATE 2021 notification out, two new subjects introduced with relaxation in eligibility criterion

The Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B) has declared the notification of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, GATE 2021. The entrance exam of GATE 2021 will be conducted in two phases from February 5-7 to February 12-14, 2021. It's a quite longer duration than the usual one because of the COVID-19 pandemic situation in the country.

In the notification of GATE 2021, the IIT-B relaxes the eligibility criterion for the admission in the postgraduate programme. From now, those students who are in their third year of graduation can also apply for the GATE exam. From the minimum 10+2+4(ongoing) to the minimum 10+2+3(ongoing), which brings an opportunity for Arts and Commerce students too.

With the relaxation in the eligibility criterion, the IIT-B also introduced two new subjects. Environmental science and engineering and humanities and social sciences are now also added. This is making the total number of subjects to 27.

“I am particularly delighted at the creation of much needed new career opportunities for those in the Humanities and Social Sciences area as this may serve as one single standardized criterion for admission to various masters and doctoral programs in various IITs and other universities in India", said Professor Subhasis Chaudhuri, Director of IIT Bombay.

Professor Chaudhuri also said "Should any agency, for example, various PSUs want to hire candidates with Humanities background, this new exam paper in GATE will prove to be a great enabler!”

In a statement given by IIT- Bombay, “To boost the opportunity to study in inter-disciplinary areas, unlike in the previous year when a candidate could write only one subject paper, the candidate can now opt for up to two subject papers (from a prescribed set of combinations) that the exam calendar would permit.”

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination conducted jointly by Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (at Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras & Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordinating Board (NCB), Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.
