Former cricketer Yashpal Sharma dies of heart attack

Ground Report | New Delhi: Former cricketer Yashpal Sharma; Former cricketer Yashpal Sharma, who was included in the Indian team that won the Cricket World Cup for the first time in 1983, has died of cardiac arrest.

Yashpal Sharma represented India in 37 ODIs and 42 Tests and was an important part of the Indian middle-order from 1979–83. He also served as the national selector for a few years and was reappointed to the panel in 2008.

In the 1983 World Cup, he was the top scorer for India in the semi-final against England where he scored 61 runs and was involved. In a match-winning partnership of 92 runs with Mohinder Amarnath for the third wicket, he added 63 runs for the fourth wicket with Sandeep Patil.

Former cricketer Yashpal Sharma got India off to a stellar start in the 1983 World Cup as he scored a match-winning 89 against West Indies, the first of the showpiece event for India. As wickets kept falling from the other end, he ensured that India reached a respectable total of 262 runs. In reply, the Windies team got out for 228 runs. Yashpal was adjudged man of the match for his brilliant innings against the two-time world champion.

In his Test career, Yashpal Sharma scored 1606 runs at an average of 33.45 including 2 centuries and nine half-centuries. In ODIs, he scored 883 runs at an average of 28.48 which included four half-centuries. He also had a wicket each in both formats.
