Ground Report | New Delhi: Active militants less than 200 in J&K; For the first time in the last 30 years of militancy in Kashmir, the number of militants operating in the Valley has come down to less than 200, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kashmir Vijay Kumar said on Thursday. While the number of active local terrorists is only 86. The Kashmir Police chief also said that since last night, six terrorists, including two foreigners and a soldier, were killed in two separate encounters in the southern districts of Anantnag and Kulgam
General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 15 Corps Srinagar Lt Gen DP Pandey, IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar, SSP Anantnag Ashish Kumar Mishra, and other police officers addressing a joint press conference at 2 Sector RR Headquarters in Wuzur area of Qazigund And the army said that six terrorists, including two foreigners and a soldier, were killed in two encounters in Anantnag and Kulgam districts in the last 24 hours.
GOC 15 Corps as per News agency KNO said, “Two soldiers and a policeman were also injured in the gruesome encounter.” “The two foreign terrorists killed in the Anantnag encounter were linked to the Jaish-e-Mohammed outfit,” he said. “The slain soldier has been identified as Sepoy Jasbir Singh.” (Active militants less than 200 in J&K)Responding to the question of whether foreign terrorists are also being killed, the GoC said that it is because they are coming out of their hideouts as local terrorists are refusing to attack the forces due to their challenges. “As soon as the foreigners come out of their hideouts, they will be killed,” he said.
Speaking on the occasion, SSP Anantnag said that one M-4 carbine, eight magazines, two AK-47 rifles, and other ammunition were recovered from the slain Jaish terrorists.
Responding to a question, IGP Kashmir said that 11 terrorists were killed in the last five days and six terrorists, including two foreign terrorists, were killed in two operations since last night. However, IGP Kashmir said that the increase in encounters does not mean that militancy has increased as it was completely otherwise. IGP Kumar said, “For the first time in the last 30 years, the number of active terrorists in Kashmir has come down below 200. This is also the first time that the number of locally active terrorists is only 86.”
GOC Pandey said the recruitment of local militants has come down drastically as only 128 to 130 locals joined militancy this year as compared to 180 last year. Chipping-in, IGP Kashmir said that out of 128 local terrorists who joined militancy this year, 73 were killed, 17 were arrested and only 39 are active.
