Female’s participation in higher education increases: AISHE Report

Ground Report | New Delhi: Education Ministry of India released All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2019-20 report on Thursday. The report shows that Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in Higher education in India has increased to 27.1% and the Gender Parity Index (GPI) in higher education is 1.01 which shows females are accessing higher education more than males. This report contains a comparative analysis of higher education in India during the last five years.

Education Minister Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank released this report on Thursday and tweeted “I feel delighted to announce the release of the All India Survey on Higher Education 2019-2020 report. As you can see we have improved in Gender Parity Index. The number of Institutions of National importance increased 80% (from 75 in 2015 to 135 in 2020). " “It is because of Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi Ji’s vision and initiatives that have been able to achieve this monumental milestone today."He added.

Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in Higher education in India has increased

The report shows that Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in Higher education in India has increased to 27.1% in 2019-20 which was 26.3% in 2018-19. Out of which, GER for the male population is 26.9 and for females, it is 27.3 which implies that girl’s participation has also increased in Higher Education. Uttar Pradesh, with its highest student enrolment in India, has 49.1% male and 50.9% female students.

The Total enrolment in higher education has been estimated to be 38.5million with 19.6 million boys and 18.9 million females. Females constitute 49% of the total enrolment. As per this report, the number of universities has increased by 30% from 799 in 2015-16 to 1043 in 2019-20. The number of colleges has increased by about 8.4% from 39,071 in 2015-16 to 42,343 in 2019-20.

Female participation in academic courses is higher in comparison to professional courses

 According to the AISHE report 2019-20, there are 96.56 lakh students registered in Arts courses, 47.1 percent of whom are male and 52.9 percent are female. Science is the second most popular subject, with 47.55 lakh students, 48.3 percent of whom are male and 51.7 percent of whom are female. With 41.6 lakh students enrolled, commerce is the third most popular stream.

Male students make up 51.2 percent of Commerce students, while female students make up 48.8%. In Medical Science, Female students account for 8.04 lakh of the total 13.5 lakh pupils.

The share of male students enrolled in Engineering and Technology is 70.8 percent whereas female enrolment is 29.2 percent and in Polytechnics, it is 81.2% of male and only18.8% is female. There are 7.13 lakh students in the management stream, with 4.46 lakh men. At the Ph.D. level, a maximum number of students is enrolled in Engineering and Technology stream followed by Science.

When it comes to gender distribution, the report found that agriculture, engineering, and construction are among the most male-dominated industries. Law and Physical Education sectors have also the lowest female participation. However, Nursing and teacher training programs have more number of female than the male.
