Ground Report | New Delhi: Female student wearing shorts; A 19-year-old candidate appearing for an entrance exam in Assam's Tezpur was made to cover her feet with a veil to take the exam. After this news came to the fore, a controversy has arisen regarding the dress of the girls.

The student claims that there was no dress code written on the admit card and she had been given another exam wearing the same clothes a few days back. After all, she was allowed to appear in the examination on the condition of covering her feet with a screen.

That student named Jubilee Tamuli is a resident of Vishwanath Chariali in Upper Assam. She, along with her father, had reached the examination center at the Girijanand Chowdhury Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Tezpur, about 70 km from home, for the Assam Agricultural University entrance examination.

Jubilee said, "The security personnel at the gate did not say anything. But the inspector posted in the examination hall said that wearing this dress i.e. shorts will not be allowed to take the exam. The invigilator said that she would have to wear trousers. After that Only you will be allowed to sit in the examination.

After this, the girl came out of the examination center crying and informed her father who was waiting there. The nearest market was eight km from there. Jubilee's father somehow bought a trouser from the market. But even before that, the invigilator had allowed the student to take the examination by covering her feet with a screen.

Jubilee further said, "A lot of my precious time was wasted in this. Apart from this, the curtain was slipping and falling down again and again during the exam. This distracted my attention many times."

She took NEET in same dress

The student says that there was no mention of any dress code on the admit card. She says, "A few days ago, I took the NEET exam in the same city wearing the same dress. But there was no problem anywhere."

Jubilee said that neither Assam Agricultural University has made any rules regarding shorts nor was there any mention of it in the admit card. How would I know about this? Describing the attitude of the Controller of Examinations as completely unfair, Jubilee has decided to complain about the matter to Education Minister Ranoj Pegu. Describing this experience as extremely humiliating, she says that the Covid protocol was violated in the examination center. Neither did anyone put on a mask nor was anyone's temperature checked.

The management of the college where the exam was conducted says that it is important to maintain minimum manners in dress during the exam. This case has started a new debate on the dress code.

Principal distanced himself

On the other hand, Dr Abdul Baki Ahmed, Principal of the examination center GIPS, has distanced himself from the whole matter saying that he was not present in the college at the time of the said incident. He said that he has nothing to do with the exam. This college was taken on rent for the examination center. The examination invigilators were also outsiders.

However, he is seen defending the inspector's decision on the dispute over clothes. Ahmed says, “There is no dress code for the exam. But it is important to maintain etiquette and decency during an exam. The student’s parents should have taken care of how their daughter dressed, how No."
