Fellowship Hike: Thousands of Research scholars arrive Delhi to protest at MHRD on 16th January

From several days now, the research fellow of the country are demanding an increase in fellowship amount from the government. They now intent to go on hunger strike and agitation. After many rounds of ministries including the human development ministry, research scholars got nothing other than assurance.

Thousands of research scholars from all over the country, including IIT, IIM, JNU, AIIMS, IISER, DU, BHU, have now left their research work and has reached New Delhi, where on January 16, these students are to encircle Ministry of Human Research and Development to protest against the government.

PhD Scholar of AIIMS New Delhi and chairman of the Society of Young Scientists (All India Institute of Medical Science), L. Chandra Vishwakarma said that we have already given memorandum to the administration in this regard. Thousands of students from across the country are traveling to Delhi, where on 16th January, at 11 am, research scholars is to protest and will demand an increase in fellowship amount in front of MHRD.

Research scholars had earlier met ministers of the Modi government like Central Human Resources and Development Minister Prakash Javadekar, Union Minister Dr. Harshvardhan, Department of Science and Technology and other officials of the offices and demanded increase of fellowship amount till December 31st. But despite the deadlines, no concrete answer has been received by the government yet, due to which Research Scholar are still on in their movement.

Main demands –

  1. Fellowship amount of the JRF, SRF, PhD people must be increased by 80 per cent as it was supposed to be increased by 20 per cent per annum.
  2. The amount received under Fellowship must come on time every month, because till now the money does not come on time. Scholars receive it after three months, six months or even 8 months.
  3. The government must set up such guidelines under the Pay Commission, to ensure that the researchers under fellowships can receive the fellowship amount every month without any delay.
