Farmers movement: Police has so far arrested 183 persons: Govt

Ground Report | New Delhi: Farmers movement; The government on Wednesday said that the police have arrested 183 persons and all of them are out on bail in connection with the farmers' agitation against the three new agricultural laws of the Centre. Along with this, the government said that the provisions of the anti-sedition or anti-terror law have not been invoked in any of the cases registered against the agitating farmers.

In the reply given by the Union Home Ministry in the Rajya Sabha, it has been told that Delhi Police has arrested about 183 people related to the farmers' movement so far.

However, it was also claimed in Parliament by the government that all those arrested have been released on bail. In a written reply to the question asked by the CPI MP, the government said that this figure is from 2020 to 20 July 2021 last year.

It was also told by the government that the provisions of laws like sedition and anti-terror law, UAPA have not been implemented by the Delhi Police against those arrested for the farmers' agitation.

Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai gave this information to the Rajya Sabha in a written reply to a question. He said that from the year 2020 to 20 July 2021, Delhi Police has arrested 183 people in connection with the farmers' agitation and all of them are out on bail. 

Rai said that according to the Delhi Police, in none of the cases registered against the agitating farmers, provisions of the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) like sedition or any other anti-terror law have been invoked.

For the last 9 months, farmers have been demonstrating on the borders of Delhi. During this, when the farmers had announced to take out a tractor march in Delhi on 26 January, this march took a violent form. Many protesters had reached the Red Fort. In this case, Delhi Police arrested many people. The farmers alleged that the Delhi Police did not convey the information about the arrest to the family and many farmers were missing.

Farmers' organizations have demanded that the government should immediately repeal all three of its agricultural laws, but the government has refused to do so. The government has said that if there is talk, it will be only on the amendment. At present, the talks between the farmers and the government are closed for several months.
