All you need to know about NIRF ranking 2020

Union Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal, on thursday, announced the NIRF India Rankings 2020. NIRF, The National Institutional Ranking Framework 2020 got delayed due to the countrywide coronavirus lockdown. Last year, NIRF India Rankings were announced by the President Ram Nath Kovind.

The rankings are released for various categories: Overall, University, Engineering, College, Management, Pharmacy, Law, Architecture, and Medical. The IIT Madras ranked first in overall category followed by the IISc Bangalore and IIT Delhi.

What is NIRF ranking, and it's working.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was approved by the MHRD and launched by Honourable Minister of Human Resource Development on 29th September 2015.The National Institutional Ranking Framework or NIRF is an annual ranking and was launched in 2015 and the first rankings were released in 2016.

This framework outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country. The procedure draws from the overall recommendations, broad understanding arrived at by a Core Committee set up by MHRD, to identify the broad parameters for ranking various universities and institutions. The parameters broadly cover “Teaching, Learning and Resources,” “Research and Professional Practices,” “Graduation Outcomes,” “Outreach and Inclusivity,” and “Perception”.

What are the Parameters of this ranking?

• Teaching, Learning & Resources (TLR)
• Student Strength including Doctoral Students (SS)
• Faculty-student ratio with emphasis on permanent faculty (FSR)
• Combined metric for Faculty with PhD (or equivalent) and Experience (FQE)
• Financial Resources and their Utilisation (FRU)
• Research and Professional Practice (RP)
• Combined metric for Publications (PU)
• Combined metric for Quality of Publications (QP)
• IPR and Patents: Published and Granted (IPR)
• Footprint of Projects and Professional Practice (FPPP)

Ranking of nirf 2020

This year, the number of institutions taking part increased by 20%. More than 38000 academic institutions have participated in the NIRF Rankings 2020. Last year, there were a total of 1,479 entries.

Ranking of institutions has helped improving the quality of higher education in the country.This is the first time dental institutes have also included in NIRF Rankings.NIRF India Rankings will also help our institutions to perform better in the international rankings.

Top 3 institutes in the "Overall" category: First, IIT Madras follwed by IISc Bangalore and IIT Delhi as second and third respectively.
Top 3 in Engineering institutions: First IIT Madras followed by IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay.

In Architecture category, the IIT Kharagpur ranked first followed by IIT Roorkee and IIT Calicut. In the University ranking category, IISc Bangalore ranked first followed by JNU and BHU. In Management institutes category, IIM Ahmedabad ranked first followed by IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta.

In the dental category, Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, Delhi ranked first followed by Manipal college of Dental Sciences, Udipi, and Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth, Pune.Miranda House, Delhi ranked No.1 in College category followed by LSR College, Delhi and Hindu College, Delhi. AIIMS Delhi declared best medical college in India, PGI Chandigarh and CMC Vellore at second and third spot respectively.

The global organisations give us low ranking based on perception and I do not agree with it, said the HRD Minister.Sanjay Dhotre says we should make our students industry ready. The course curriculum should be designed to make students better person and industry ready.

While Talking about 'National Test Abhyas App', HRD minister said more than 10 lakh engineering and medical aspirants used the app to test their preparedness for JEE. (Main) and NEET-UG. He also added that, the govt to come up with more than 100 institutions for online education.
