Evaluation Criteria; How CBSE Will do marking of class 12th students?

Ground Report | New Delhi: After the cancellation of CBSE board 2021 exams on June 01 this month amid the ongoing nationwide COVID-19 pandemic and decided that CBSE compile the results as per well-defined objective criteria in a time-bound manner. A committee of 13 members had set up to decide the marking scheme till June 4, 2021, Now it seems that these members will take some more time for the announcement of the evaluation criteria for CBSE 10^th and 12^th board exam 2021.

After the release of the result evaluation criteria for class 12th, it will be known on what basis the students of class 12th will be passed. Although no official announcement has been made by the CBSE Board regarding the release of the Evaluation Criteria, it is being claimed in all the media reports. That being said, a 20:30:50 formula may be acceptable for class 12th evaluation criteria.

In this, 20% weightage is to be given to the child's class 10th performance, 30% to class 12th practical exam 2021, and 50% weightage for internal assessment of class 12th marks. For the internal assessment of class 12th, schools have suggested choosing the best performance of the student in various examinations. 

It is noteworthy that while hearing a petition seeking cancellation of CBSE board examinations, the Supreme Court on Thursday said that it is happy that the decision has been taken to cancel the CBSE and ICSE Class XII board examinations. A bench of Justices AM Khanwilkar and Dinesh Maheshwari had then sought to know from CBSE and ICSE about the norms prescribed for internal assessment. For this, the bench had asked CBSE to bring the guidelines in two weeks. 

Then during the hearing, Attorney General KK Venugopal, appearing for CBSE, informed the bench that on June 1, CBSE had decided to cancel the 12th examination. Venugopal had said that the standards for internal assessment would be set in two weeks. After which the court adjourned the hearing of the case for two weeks. It is to be known that after CBSE, ICSE had also decided to cancel the 12th examination. 

The final report will be submitted to the supreme court on June 16. It has been informed that the SC will be hearing the CBSE case on June 17. The petitioner has evaluated only on the basis of internal marks. There are reports that previous year’s results are also under consideration.

When Will CBSE Announce Assessment Criteria?

Talking to a leading portal, Board Secretary Anurag Tripathi had said that the evaluation methodology will be decided in about two weeks. NDTV quoted Tripathi as saying, "The evaluation criteria for Class 12 students have not been decided yet. We may take about two weeks to decide how the Class 12 students will be assessed."

Reports suggest that the CBSE has two possible plans for CBSE Class 12 results

1. Evaluation of students on the basis of their marks in class 10th, 11th final examination, and class 12th internal examination.
2. The board can evaluate the students on the basis of class 10 board exam results and class 12 internal assessment.

The ministry officials said, “ the board consensus was to factor in marks scored in the class10 boards, class 11(annual) exam, and class 12 pre-boards. There were differences in the exact weightage to be given to each component. That final decision will be taken by CBSE.  It is also expected that to keep in check the inflation of marks, the CBSE might instruct the schools to ensure that the marks awarded to students are in accordance with the performance of the schools in the CBSE class 12 boar4d exam 2021 in the last three years.

In a letter to the Union Education Minister, Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia suggested that the results of class 12 students should be tabulated keeping in mind the marks obtained during class 10, 11, and pre-board exams.

“Since most of the theory subjects carry an exam of 70 marks each, the result can be calculated as follows – 30 marks weightage for pre-board exams and 20 marks for class 11 and 10 exams. The remaining 30 marks may be for practical examination," Sisodia said in a letter to Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal "Nishank".

He said, "CBSE has allowed moderation of plus 2 or minus 2 marks depending on the result of the respective school in the last three years, I believe the moderation reference for class 12 should be plus 5 or minus 5 marks "
