Environmental crime cases nearly doubled in 2020: Govt in Lok Sabha

Ground Report | New Delhi: Environmental crime cases in India; The number of registered cases for environment-related crimes increased to 61,767 in 2020 from 34,676 in 2019, said Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Minister of State for Environment, Forests and Climate Change of the Union told Lok Sabha.

All governments should support the transition from light vehicles to zero-emission vehicles, Choubey said at Lok Sabha. "Two and three-wheelers make up more than 70 percent of world sales and more than 80 percent in India."

India supported a "non-binding" statement from the Zero Emission Vehicle Transition Council (ZEVTC) at the 26th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The declaration calls for hard work to accelerate the proliferation and adoption of zero-emission vehicles.

All developed countries have been urged to strengthen international collaboration and support for a global, equitable, and just transition, the minister added. While supporting the declaration on the above-mentioned lines, India mentioned, “two-wheelers and three-wheelers constitute more than 70% of global sales and more than 80% in India. All governments should also support the transition of these light vehicles to zero-emission vehicles”.All developed countries have been called to strengthen international collaboration and support so that a global, equitable, and just transition is realised.

India has already made great strides on introducing policies towards the faster adoption of electric mobility. India’s Transformative Mobility paradigm is shifting towards; shared, connected and electric, to meet our global commitments, and have positive implications for the environment, and reduce high import dependency on oil. To give an impetus to the manufacturing and adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in India, the Government of India is supporting the ecosystem through following national flagship schemes.

conducting capacity building for Forests & Police Officials on the investigation of Wildlife cases under the provisions of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. 26 such programs were conducted and 1081 officials from State Police and Forest department were trained in 2018-19, 24 programs conducted and 1102 officials trained in 2019-20, while 11 programs had been conducted and 403 officials trained in 2020-21. In 2021-22 till September 2021, 03 such Capacity Building have been conducted resulting in the training of 141 officials.

Low wastewater treatment capacity in cities

The country's installed urban wastewater treatment capacity is 43.9% of the amount of wastewater generated daily (72,368 million liters per day, MLD), said Bishweswar Tudu, Union Minister of State for Jal Shakti ( water resources) to the Rajya Sabha. The Central Groundwater Authority was established under Section 3 (3) of the “Environmental (Protection) Law, 1986” for the purpose of regulating and controlling the development and management of groundwater.

The latest guidelines for the control and regulation of groundwater extraction were notified by the Jal Shakti Ministry on September 24, 2020, Tudu added. The Government of India is providing financial assistance to the identified water bodies in the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana - Har Khet Ko Pani Water Body Repair, Renovation, and Restoration component, the minister added.
