India invites proposals for Green Hydrogen R&D Centres of Excellence

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has issued a call for proposals to establish Centres of Excellence (CoEs) for Green Hydrogen research and development as part of India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission. This initiative aims to position India as a leader in Green Hydrogen technology by fostering innovation and advancing sustainable energy solutions. The proposal guidelines, released on November 4, are accessible via MNRE’s official channels.

The proposed CoEs will be hubs for research in Green Hydrogen production, storage, and utilization, designed to expedite India’s transition to a low-carbon economy. Focusing on technology development, these centers will facilitate skill development, knowledge sharing, and collaboration between industry, academia, and government. By aggregating expertise and resources, the CoEs aim to advance India’s Green Hydrogen ecosystem, improving production efficiencies and enabling new product developments to reshape the nation’s energy landscape.

Earlier this year, on March 15, MNRE released guidelines under the R&D Scheme of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, outlining the framework for research initiatives and CoE establishment. This follows the government’s allocation of Rs 100 crore towards these centers as part of its broader Green Hydrogen Mission.

Launched on January 4, 2023, with an outlay of Rs 19,744 crore through FY 2029-30, the National Green Hydrogen Mission represents a significant step in India’s commitment to clean energy. The mission aligns with the country’s goal of achieving Aatma Nirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) by reducing fossil fuel dependence, decarbonizing the economy, and positioning India as a global leader in Green Hydrogen technology.
