EC’s Double Standard on Rahul Gandhi’s Interview

Ground Report | New Delhi: Election Rahul Gandhi's Interview; Political parties are all set to compete in a petty manner as the elections approach. Ahead of Gujrat’s elections, Rahul Gandhi has made headlines in the news but this time he got in trouble, the troublemaker here was the Election commission for showing double standards. Gujrat assembly elections are in polling for its second phase while the election commission had asked Gandhi why legal action should not be taken against him.

FIR Against Rahul Gandhi’s Interview:

The Election commission asked TV channels to stop airing Rahul Gandhi’s Interview. As per the commission, it violated the Representation of People Act, 1951. The matter falls under section 126 (3) of the above-stated act. “The display of such matter within 48 hours of the poll in the polling areas violates the Representation of People Act, 1951,” said the Election Commission in a press conference.

The Election commission also stated that Gandhi talked about the election ahead of the phase two polling. EC has also directed the Gujrat Poll Authorities to lodge FIR complaints against those channels that aired the interview for infringement of legal provisions as per the reports of NDTV

Election Commission has also directed the Chief Electoral Officer “to initiate necessary action by filing FIR against those who violated the stated provisions”. Continuing further statement the EC said, “those TV channels which are violating the provisions of section 126 (1) (b) by displaying said election matter in phase two district in Gujrat have been directed to forthwith stop the display of such matter”.

Congress’s Take on Election Commissions Polls Violations Action:

Congress had firmly stood its ground and further questioned and attacked the election commission over the poll violations press conference. They called EC for showing double standards by forth stopping Rahul Gandhi’s Interview and imposing FIR charges. The Senior Party Leader Randeep Surjewala attacked the EC by tweeting “If FIR against news channels for showing an interview of Congress President, why no FIR against PM, FM, Union Minister and BJP President on this ground? Are these not double standards? Let there be accountability.”

Congress Delegation Leader Ashok Gehlot tweeted “PM Modi, BJP president Amit Shah, finance minister Arun Jaitley, and railway minister Piyush Goyal have violated Model Code of Conduct again and again. PM Modi misused the FICCI platform to attack congress. EC should stay unbiased.”

The delegation of Congress submitted a memorandum to the EC demanding immediate filing of FIR against the BJP leaders for violating the model code of conduct as per the reports of TOI.

Such double standards shown by the EC put the system in doubt. If everyone is equal before the law, then why charge one for violating the law and letting go of the other? These questions are left to be answered by the Election Commission as they owe not just the party but the public a reasonable response.
