In a major political upheaval in Maharashtra, rebel Shivsena MLA Eknath Shinde was sworn in as Chief Minister of the state on Thursday. At the same time, Devendra Fadnavis, who is considered a candidate for the CM post, became Deputy Chief Minister after some confusion.
But Fadnavis, considered the architect of the ongoing political turmoil in Maharashtra, was not aware of this decision by the party’s central leadership, which was also reflected in her press conference.
According to the Indian Express, Fadnavis was not aware of the whole change and therefore she announced that Shinde would become the Cheif Minister and would not join the government. But, after some time, the party’s national chairman, JP Nadda, appointed Fadnavis as Deputy Chief Minister and urged him to accept the post.
After JP Nadda’s announcement, Home Minister Amit Shah also praised Fadnavis and announced that he would appoint him as deputy chief minister.
This type of confusion is not normal in a game that always emphasizes planning and discipline. But, according to the sources, although Fadnavis was not aware of this, Eknath Shinde was informed about it.
The newspaper quoted sources as saying that there has definitely been confusion about giving the responsibility to Devendra Fadnavis. The party considered that in order to implement the government’s policies before the elections, it would be better to have a strong BJP leader in the government who controls the bureaucracy, can implement the government’s agenda and provide a stable government.
Had Fadnavis not been in government, he would have become a separate center of power that could have caused problems. At the same time, keeping him out would also have disappointed the cadre and might have sent the wrong message.
However, the match was clear about Shinde, as he had said that he would be the CM if he got the required MLA support from Shiv Sena.
Fadnavis had come to Delhi and met Amit Shah and JP Nadda twice, but he did not even notice this change. It is also clear from this that after the resignation of former CM Uddhav Thackeray, Devendra Fadnavis received congratulatory messages from party workers, which he happily accepted.
According to the senior party leader, this decision has been made entirely from Delhi. Apart from this, BJP has also tried to create a caste equation. A BJP leader said: “We have to focus on social engineering. In a state with three per cent Brahmins, having a Brahmin Cheif minister might have been attacked by the opposition.”
Eknath Shinde is a Maratha who makes up 30 per cent of the state’s population. During Fadnavis’ tenure as Chief Minister, the Maratha people staged a massive protest.
One of the reasons why the party wanted to control the rapidly growing stature of Devendra Fadnavis also emerges. According to the sources, the growing popularity of Fadnavis was in the eyes of the state and central leadership, so it is also seen as an attempt to clip Fadnavis’ wings.
In Maharashtra, the government of Maha Vikas Aghadi of the Shiv Sena, the NCP and the Congress has fallen. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray resigned on Thursday after several Shiv Sena MLAs revolted.
