Dry fruits prices rise in Jammu due to disruption in imports from Afghan

Ground Report | New Delhi: Dry fruits prices rise; The Dry Fruits Retailers Association in Jammu has said that prices have increased by up to Rs 250 per kg as the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan has hampered imports for the past 15-20 days.

Jyoti Gupta, president of the association, said, “We import many things like almonds, figs, apricots, pistachios, cumin seeds from Afghanistan.” Afghan almonds have become costlier by Rs 200 per kg, pistachios by Rs 250.

Due to the situation prevailing in Afghanistan, imports are not being done for the last 15 days. In such a situation, there is a shortage of dry fruits in the market.

The import of dry fruits from Afghanistan has increased in the last few years. However, the changed circumstances have now led to Taliban rule in Afghanistan. This regime is also expected to have an impact on trade relations between India and Afghanistan.

According to experts, if the situation in Afghanistan does not improve, there may be a shortage of dry fruits in the festive season. Due to the shortage of dry fruits in the markets across the country, the price is likely to increase.

What happened in Afghanistan so far

• After the Taliban’s capture in Kabul, thousands of people reached Kabul airport in an attempt to escape from there. Due to this a situation of stampede was created there. According to the reports, five people have died at the airport due to the stampede.
• Indian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi has said that in view of the current situation in Afghanistan, it has been decided to bring back the Indian Ambassador and Embassy staff present in Kabul to India immediately.
• The US and Britain have sent special troops to evacuate their citizens from Afghanistan. Britain has sent 200 soldiers and the US has sent 1,000 additional soldiers to Afghanistan.

• US President Joe Biden backed the decision to withdraw his troops from the US and acknowledged that the situation in Afghanistan has turned out to be faster than expected.
• On Monday, the US military took control of the airport and restarted it after all flights to and from Kabul airport were cancelled.
• Biden warned that the US would “defend its people with all destructive power” if the Taliban attacked American troops. Biden has said that the US will continue to help Afghanistan and will continue diplomatic efforts at the provincial level to ensure that violence and instability do not occur.
