Discovery of world's largest avalanche

The avalanche, which is separated from the Antarctic ice sheet, is larger than the Spanish island of Magroca. In that sense, the ice floe is the largest avalanche in the world.

Ground Report | New Delhi: The European Space Agency (ESA) said that a large chunk of ice had split off frozen coast of Antarctica and landed in Waddell area, causing one of the world's largest ice caps. The avalanche, named A-76, is said to be about 4,320 square kilometers above sea level. It is 175 km long and about 25 km wide. Due to its latitude, the avalanche is larger than the Spanish island of Magruca.

A-76, Ron is off the ice shelf. It was first discovered by the British Antarctic Survey. The US ice agency National Ice Center has also confirmed this based on images taken with the help of the space agency. An avalanche called 'A-23A' is already floating in the Waddell Sea, but this new piece of ice is much larger. The A-23A is about 3,380 km in size, while the new avalanche is more than 4,000 square kilometers in size.

The Ron Ice Shelf is one of the many large floating ice sheets in this ocean area that meets the mainland of Antarctica and extends to the surrounding seas. The removal of large glaciers from their shelves in this area is usually part of a natural process. According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center, the US Geological Survey, scientists say this could be due to changes in the weather.
