Delhi Violence: Students protest outside Kejriwal’s residence as violence continues

On the back of continuing riots in Northeast Delhi since last three days, students today gathered outside Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's residence to protest against his alleged inaction and seemingly passive posture in response to one of the most violent episodes in decades in the capital. Students mostly comprised from Jawaharlal Nehru University and Jamia Coordination Committee, in addition to members of the Alumni Association of Jamia Millia Islamia.

Police dispersed the crowd using water cannons and tried to keep situation under control. Students alleged that they were detained by the police and taken to nearby Civil Lines police station. Students were demanding to meet the chief minister and submit a charter of demands over violence in the capital.

At least 20 have been killed and hundreds injured since the outbreak of the violence on Sunday when the clashes occurred between Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) supporters and anti-CAA protesters, which eventually escalated into deadly riots with widespread arson and burning of properties, including shops and homes belonging to people from the Muslim community.

It is high time that the AAP govt. takes a robust stand against the communal hate that is being perpetrated by the saffron terrorists.

Appealing to Kejriwal to take action against the violence in affected areas in Northeast Delhi, concerned protesters asked the Chief Minister to personally visit affected areas with local MLAs and organise peace marches to de-escalate tensions. They also urged the Chief Minister to inform citizens about steps being taken by the Delhi government and allow all rescued people from the affected areas to reach hospitals safely.

Also, Congress leaders appealed for calm and criticised the Delhi Police's inability to curb the situation. Senior Congress leader and former finance minister P Chidambaram says the violence in the national capital shows the “colossal failure of the Delhi Police”. Taking to Twitter, Chidambaram adds: “Two High Court judges had to hold a midnight hearing last night to ensure the safe evacuation of injured persons to a proper hospital. What does it say about the performance of Delhi Police?"

The violence has continued since Monday and even now there are incidents of violence. It shows the colossal failure of the Delhi Police.
