On Saturday afternoon, Delhi’s Education Minister, Manish Sisodia, announced that no exams will be held for Universities in Delhi. The decision has been taken due to increasing Covid-19 cases in Delhi. The students of state universities will be promoted and granted their degrees on basis of their previous performances. He added that “State universities have been asked to devise parameters for evaluation to award degrees to the final year students.”
“All the students in Delhi state universities will be promoted to next semesters and the final year students can awarded their degree basis their past performance.”

Since the pandemic has affected education sector adversely, this announcement has come as a relief for students who were already trending #NoExamMHRD on twitter.
After University Grants Commission’s (UGC) announcement earlier this week to hold final semester exams by end of September, there was a certain agitation among the students. Sisodia added “It will be injustice to ask students to appear in exams due to the covid-19 pandemic and to hold their degrees in absence of an exam.”

The center and the state have shown a disagreement on conduct of exams so far till now, as UGC is still adamant on conducting exams whether in online or offline mode. UGC is in favour of conducting exams to maintain the credibility of higher education, whereas Delhi government has said that unprecedented conditions call for unprecedented decisions. Delhi government maintains that the decision has been taken to protect students from catching infection as the condition in Delhi worsens. Delhi has over 1 lakh Covid-19 positive cases till now.
After the announcement by UGC to conduct exams the students had started showing their dissent on twitter. Many students have posted their concerns on twitter claiming that having online exams can be problematic in more than one ways for them as they suffer with the spread of pandemic, connectivity issues and many other problems. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has also written to center to reconsider their decision about the conduct of exams.
