Delhi crime capital? most unsafe for women

Ground Report | New Delhi: Delhi crime capital; Although crime has come down in Delhi overall, it still remains the 'crime capital'. According to the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), It is the most unsafe city for women in the country. These figures are also a testimony to the fact that after the Nirbhaya case, the government efforts have proved to be unsuccessful even after the tremendous noise.

Delhi crime capital

According to the NCRB report, over 10,093 cases of crimes against women were registered in the national capital last year. These cases in Delhi are more than double the number of cases reported in Mumbai, Pune, Ghaziabad, Bangalore, or Indore. In 2018, 13,640 cases of crimes against women were registered in Delhi, while in the next year i.e. 2019, this number was reduced to 300.

As per the NCRB data, last year more than 2.4 lakh cases were registered by Delhi Police i.e. more than 650 cases on an average everyday. According to the report, the number of cases registered under the Indian Penal Code in Delhi has declined by 18 percent in 2020 as compared to 2019.

A comparison with Delhi shows that 19,964 cases were registered in Bangalore and 50,000 in Mumbai last year. A total of 472 murder cases were registered in Delhi last year, with 'love affairs' and property disputes being the most common reasons. While 521 murder cases were registered in Delhi in 2019.

Kidnapping cases

NCRB data shows that kidnapping cases have come down from 5,900 in 2019 to 4,062 in 2020. Of these, more than 3,000 cases were in the age group of 12 to 18 years. Although there has been a decline in these cases, Delhi still recorded the highest number of kidnapping cases. Delhi was followed by Mumbai with 1,173 cases and Lucknow 735.

997 rapes, 110 dowry deaths, 1,840 assaults with intent to outrage the dignity of women, and 326 harassment cases were registered in the capital. More than half of these victims were under 30. The data also shows that in most cases the perpetrators were known to the victims.

Cybercrime, including online theft, fraud, and sexual harassment, increased last year. Delhi recorded more than 168 cases, which is about 50-60 more than the previous years. Police said that on average five to ten people were detained in each case. Police said that compared to other metros, Delhi witnessed fewer cyber crimes.
