Delay in hiking fellowship amount, research scholars warn of imminent protest

As the delay in hiking the fellowship amount for research scholars continues, a meeting of scholars from across India was held at the All Indian Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) in New Delhi. During the meeting, it was decided that a letter in this regard will be sent to all ministries of the center to apprise them of their demands. A draft will be sent within 15 days.

Talking to Ground Report, Lal Chandra, chief of All India Research Scholar Association said that they have met with several ministers including officials from that HRD ministry, but to no avail, as there hasn’t been any development so far. The scholars have given a deadline till December for the ministry to reach a decision.

The fellowship which is hiked every four years was supposed to be increased about six months ago. The delay is creating a sense of panic among the academics. The previous hike was introduced in December 2014 when the UGC increased the fellowship by 55 per cent following which JRF students who were getting Rs16,000 to now receives Rs 18,000 while senior research fellows get Rs 28,000. This amount is excluding the 20 per cent housing allowance.
