Covid: States come into action after SC order, taken care of orphaned children

So far more than three lakh people have lost their lives. Those affected by Covid include children who lost their parents.

Ground Report | New Delhi: The second wave of Covid-19 infection created a difficult situation for India. Millions of cases have come up every day, so far more than three lakh people have lost their lives. Those affected by Covid include children who lost their parents. The Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh Shivraj Singh Chauhan said that government will provide free education and a pension of ₹5,000 per month to children whose parents died of Covid. He also said that children will be provided free ration even if they are not eligible for it. 

The Supreme Court also issued directions to the states regarding orphaned children in the Covid period. The Supreme Court on Friday said that the state governments should take care of the needs of the orphaned children in Corona. The court directed the states to identify children who have lost either their parents or the earning family after the nationwide lockdown.

Following the order of the Supreme Court, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu has announced a grant amount of Rs five lakh to such children. In addition, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray, in a meeting with the Department of Women and Child Development, called for framing a policy for children who have lost parents due to corona. Thackeray has said to worry about the upbringing of such children and the provision of education.

The Bihar government has come forward to help all those children who have been orphaned due to Corona. The government will give one thousand rupees as assistance to all the orphaned children till the age of 18 years. This amount will be given to the children by the Social Welfare Department. In order to help the children, the Social Welfare Department has issued a directive to all the District Magistrates to take applications.
