Coronavirus update: Mumbai may extend lockdown till April 30

Mumbai is set to extend lockdown till April 30 as authorities race to expand testing to stem the spread of coronavirus cases in the city, according to the report of Reuters.

A 21-day nationwide lockdown that Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared in March to fight the epidemic is officially set to end on April 14 but Mumbai, with a population of more than 20 million, has become India's coronavirus epicentre. The metropolis and its suburbs have reported 782 positive cases and 50 deaths, the latest health bulletin said on Wednesday.

The number of patients infected with the coronavirus in the country is increasing steadily. According to the latest figures of the Union Health Ministry, the number of infected patients has reached 5194 in the country so far, 402 people have recovered, while 150 people have died. There have been 35 deaths and 773 cases of infection in past 24 hours. In Maharashtra, the number of infected patients has crossed 1000. The state has the highest number of casualties at 64.

According to the Ministry of Health, the highest in Maharashtra is 64, 13-13 in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh, seven in the capital Delhi, 7-7 in Punjab and Telangana, 5 in West Bengal, 3-3 in Uttar Pradesh-Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh. 4, 7 in Tamil Nadu, 4 in Karnataka, 2-2 in Jammu and Kashmir, 3 in Haryana, one each in Himachal, Odisha and Bihar.
