CMIE data shows 1.9 million Indians lost their jobs in August

Ground Report | New Delhi: CMIE data shows; In the month of August, about 19 lakh people have lost their jobs from the manufacturing sector. According to the media reports the unemployment situation in the country quoting a private research firm.

Data compiled by 'The Center for Monitoring Indian Economy' (CMIE) shows that employment conditions improved slightly but the unemployment rate rose to 8.32 per cent in August, The Telegraph reported.

According to CMIE, after the lockdown last year, the unemployment rate rose to 8.35 percent in the same period. Based on the data, CMIE says that 39.97 crore people got employment in July, while in August their number came down to 39.78 crore. This shows that 19 lakh people have lost their jobs in the last one month.

According to CMIE, the unemployment rate was 11.9% in May this year and 1.5 crore people lost their jobs this month. This was the same time when the second wave of corona epidemic in the country was in turmoil.

Labour economist Santosh Mehrotra said that the unemployment situation had returned to the level of the post-lockdown period in 2020.

Mehrotra pointed out that the decline in job conditions in the manufacturing sector was accompanied by an increase in employment in agriculture between 2017-18 and 2020-21, leading to overcrowding and wage cuts.

35% in 2017-18

“The unemployment crisis is the same as last year. According to CMIE data, the share of agriculture in total employment was 35 per cent in 2017-18, which increased to 39.5 per cent in 2020-21. On the other hand, the share of manufacturing sector in total employment declined from 10 per cent to 7.5 per cent during this period. When more workers are joining agriculture, which is already crowded, it will reduce the wage rate, which is what is happening,” Mehrotra said.

He said the figures were inconsistent with the government's Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.

The government's periodic labor force survey for 2019-20 also highlighted the glut of employment in the agriculture sector. The share of agriculture in total employment in rural sector increased from 57.8 percent in 2018-19 to 61.5 percent in 2019-20.
