CM Amarinder Singh resigns

Ground Report | New Delhi: CM Amarinder Singh resigns; Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh today met Governor Banwari Lal Purohit and submitted his resignation. Amarinder Singh's son Raninder Singh Twittered that Amarinder not only submitted his resignation but also submitted the resignation of the Council of Ministers.

A meeting of all Congress MLAs of Punjab was called at Chandigarh's state Congress office at 5 pm on Saturday, but minutes before that Captain Amarinder Singh has submitted his resignation.

Earlier, former Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar has also given indications by tweeting that some big change is going to happen. He had tweeted, "Shri Rahul Gandhi should be commended for using the Punjabi version of Sikandar Wale solution to a difficult and complex problem. Such a bold leadership decision will not only solve the confusion of Punjab Congress but will thrill Congress workers as well. It will surely spread a shiver in the spines of the Akalis."

Amarinder's political stature

In 2014, when there was a perception that big Congress leaders were shying away from contesting the Lok Sabha elections, at the behest of Sonia Gandhi, Amarinder agreed to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Amritsar against Arun Jaitley and eventually defeated Jaitley.

At the time of contesting this election, Amarinder was an MLA in the Punjab Legislative Assembly. In the 2017 assembly elections, the Congress-led by Captain Amarinder Singh returned to power after 10 years in Punjab by winning 77 of the total 117 seats.

This victory of Amarinder Singh was very important in the sense that after the formation of the Narendra Modi government at the Center in 2014, the BJP was continuously forming its government in many states. These included states like Haryana, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Assam, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh.
