Case of 'mysterious' disease in Andhra Pradesh, lead and nickel found in blood

Amid fears of covid-19, Eluru city of West Godavari district in Andhra Pradesh with a population of over three lakhs was shaken by a 'mysterious' disease.

Health officials suspect that there will be damage from bad food and water. The preliminary report of an AIIMS team in New Delhi found lead and lead in blood samples.

Superintendent of Eluru Government Hospital, Dr. AV Mohan said, "We have sent more samples and are waiting for the report."

A scientist at the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) in Hyderabad said, "The seizures point to neurological problems. Potential heavy metal contamination will be investigated."

A team of NIN has taken samples of water, edible oil and rice. The team includes public health experts, epidemiologists, microbiologists and food safety specialists.

However Opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has insisted that drinking water contamination caused the people to fall ill, even though the government denies it. TDP chief and former CM N Chandrababu Naidu has demanded “an impartial, full-fledged inquiry into the incident”.
