Ground Report | New Delhi: Who was Bilal Ahmed Magray; President Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday awarded Kirti Chakra posthumously to Jammu and Kashmir SPO Bilal Ahmed Magrey for his role in an anti-terrorist operation in Baramulla in 2019. Despite being seriously injured, he had shown indomitable courage in evacuating civilians and is engaging with terrorists. The award was received by his mother Sara Begum.

A video shared on social media shows Sara Begum struggling to contain tears as a voiceover narrates how her son fought bravely during a security operation.

The event was a defense decoration ceremony which was held on Tuesday. Bilal Ahmed Magrey had shown indomitable courage in evacuating civilians and engaging terrorists despite being seriously injured during the operation in Baramulla in 2019.

After receiving the award from President Ram Nath Kovind, Sara Begum greeted the senior ministers sitting behind her. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, apparently impressed by the occasion, was seen consoling the elderly woman with her son's award in her hand before walking away.

The citation for the award mentions how his son Bilal Ahmed Magrey, despite being seriously injured in the security operation, evacuated civilians and engaged terrorists.

"Mr. Bilal Ahmed Magrey involved himself in the Room Intervention Operational Party and thus to evacuate the trapped civilians from the targeted house and neutralize the terrorist. When the SPO Bilal Ahmed was evacuating the civilians, the hiding terrorists threw several grenades and fired shots at him and his operational associates indiscriminately, resulting in serious injuries to him and party commander SI Shri Amar Deep and a civilian Sonu Lal."

Despite being seriously injured, Mr Magrey "showed indomitable courage and pulled out injured civilians and other civilians", it added.

Who was Bilal Ahmed Magray

Ahmed showed immense courage by rescuing civilians from a targeted home during an anti-terrorist operation in Baramulla in 2019. Ahmed displayed great bravery and continued to rescue civilians even after being seriously injured in the terrorist attacks. As announced by the citation, Bilal Ahmed Magrey enlisted himself in the Room Intervention Operational Party and thus rescued the trapped people.
