Ground Report | New Delhi: Anti-conversion law, UP; A case has been registered against a man in Uttar Pradesh's Fatehpur district for trying to convert his wife to a Muslim under the state's new anti-conversion law. According to the report of The Hindu, the person is a truck driver by profession and recently Allahabad High Court had granted him bail in this case. The man has said in the High Court that both he and his wife are Hindus.

On June 26, an FIR was registered against 28-year-old Vijay Kumar Sonkar at Khakhreru police station under sections three, five (1) of the Uttar Pradesh Unlawful Conversion Prohibition Ordinance 2020. Cases were registered. A case has also been registered against Sonkar under sections 295, 323, and 506 of the IPC.

Fatehpur ASP Rajesh Kumar said that Sonkar's 22-year-old wife Poonam Devi had complained that he and his family were being pressured to convert to Islam. Rajesh Kumar said in June that Sonkar was allegedly helped by a Muslim truck driver friend to convert to Islam. On July 6, a local court had refused bail to Sonkar in the case.

According to the bail order, Poonam Devi has said that her husband wanted her to become a Muslim. On June 25, Poonam Devi had accused her husband of torturing and humiliating her for converting to Islam. Poonam Devi has said that when her husband killed her to convert to Islam, her father-in-law did not stop.

On the other hand, Sonkar's lawyer has said in court that he has been implicated in this case. According to Sonkar's lawyer, the day he was accused of this, there was a mutual dispute in the house. Sonkar's wife was persuaded by some enmity in the neighborhood to file an FIR on the fabricated allegation.

Sonkar has also said that his married life with Poonam was going well and the allegation of pressuring him to convert to Islam is false.

Police have opposed the bail saying that Quran and other things have been found from Sonkar's house. Additional Sessions Judge Vinod Kumar Chaurasia had refused bail to Sonkar. He had said that there are very serious cases against Sonkar. After this, Sonkar approached the Allahabad High Court. On September 27, Justice Sanjay Kumar Pachauri granted bail to Sonkar. Sonkar told the High Court that both he and his wife are Hindus.
