A '3-Day Lockdown' for Uttar Pradesh

The Uttar Pradesh govt. has decided to impose a 3-day lockdown starting from 10th July, Friday to 13th July, Monday. The decision comes after the state saw rapid increase in Covid-19 cases. Prior to this decision, the UP govt. had imposed extra restrictions in areas situated near Delhi, in order to check the spread of the disease.

Here are complete guidelines regarding the '3-Day' Lockdown:

  • The lockdown will commence from 10 p.m. today and will continue till 5 a.m. Monday.
  • During the lockdown, all government as well as private offices in both urban as well as rural areas will remain shut.
  • Markets and Commercial Establishments will also remain closed during the 55-hour lockdown period.
  • Only essential services and those employed in it, will be allowed.
  • Medical screening in surveillance zones will also continue.
  • Trains and flights, both domestic and international, will be allowed to function.
  • Buses and other forms of public transport will be off the road. However, buses will be allowed to cater to those passengers arriving by train or flight.
  • Inter-state trucks will also be allowed during the lockdown.
  • Factories in rural areas will remain open. Similarly ongoing projects on highways and expressways will continue.
  • Petrol Pumps and ‘dhabas’ will continue functioning.

On July 9, the Gautam Budh Nagar district recorded 172 new cases, which was the highest single day rise. With this, the total cases in UP increased to more than 30,000. Out of these, almost 20,000 people have recovered and the death toll stands at 845. This led the UP government to go for a complete lockdown for the first time since the country entered the Unlocking Phase.

Last week, at a meeting to review the Corona Virus situation in states, Home Minister Amit Shah had asked the Yogi government to increase testing. This is because Uttar Pradesh has one of the lowest testing in the country. Following this, Amit Mohan Prasad, State Principal Secretary (Health) also informed that, 7 new RT-PCR laboratories will be opened in UP in the upcoming days. These will be located in Aligarh, Varanasi, Gonda, Moradabad, Bareilly, Mirzapur and Lucknow. This will help in enhancing the testing strategy of the state.
